Artivism For The Environment
Promoting Youth Activism and Environmental Volunteering in Shkoder
The project uses public art as a powerful tool for environmental education, awareness-raising, and advocacy, transforming Shkoder’s environmental challenges into visible and engaging public messages.
Through targeted training, mentoring, and hands-on creative activities using recycled materials, young people move beyond simply identifying environmental problems and become active environmental artivists. Equipped with new knowledge, practical skills, and creative tools, they take an active role in raising awareness, encouraging responsible behaviour, and mobilising the wider community around environmental protection.
By combining art, environmental action, and civic participation, the project promotes a stronger culture of youth activism and volunteering while demonstrating how creativity can contribute to sustainable and community-driven change.
PARTNER ORGANIZATION
AMSH
PROJECT GOAL
Lake Shkoder, the Buna River, and the surrounding areas face significant environmental challenges, including pollution, inadequate waste management, and recurring flood impacts. At the same time, limited civic engagement and untapped artistic potential highlight the need for more visible, creative, and practical forms of community participation.
The project aims to combine environmental awareness, youth engagement, and public art to encourage active citizenship and promote sustainable practices in Shkoder.
IMPLEMENTED ACTIVITIES
-
Mapping of Public Spaces
Field observations, GPS data collection, and GIS mapping were carried out to identify at least 10 potential public locations for environmental art interventions. The selected locations were identified in consultation with the Municipality of Shkoder. -
Two-Day, 16-Hour Training Programme
Twenty-five university and secondary-school students participated in an intensive training programme focused on environmental education, stencil techniques, the use of eco-friendly paints, and methods for translating environmental and pollution data into clear visual messages. -
Co-Creation and Installation of Public Artworks
Two youth groups worked alongside two mentors over a 10-day period to design and produce four public artworks using recycled plastic, metal, and glass. The artworks were developed as creative tools for raising environmental awareness in public spaces. -
“Artivism for the Environment” Public Event
The completed artworks and their environmental messages were presented during a public event attended by more than 100 participants. The event also attracted local and national media coverage, strengthening the visibility of the project and its environmental message.
LONG-TERM VALUE
The project creates sustainable value beyond its implementation period. The 25 trained environmental artivists retain practical, artistic, and environmental skills that can be applied in future initiatives. The four installations remain in public spaces as long-term reminders of environmental responsibility, while the GIS map remains available to the Municipality as a reference tool for future public-space interventions.
The project also demonstrates a low-cost and replicable model that promotes circular economy principles through the creative reuse of waste materials and community-based environmental action.
